In 2022 the members of the Media Freedom Coalition took a range of actions to promote media freedom at home and abroad. For the first time, these actions have now been brought together in an annual activity report which can be downloaded here.

Women journalists in eastern DR Congo now have improved legal support thanks to a grant to the Collectif des Femmes Journalistes from the Global Media Defence Fund (GMDF), a fund that was initiated and continues to be supported by members of the Media Freedom Coalition.

The safety of journalists was at the top of the agenda at Slovakia’s Media Freedom Conference on 20th February 2023, an event organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic under the auspices of the Media Freedom Coalition.

The MFC’s Diplomatic Networks Initiative protects and promotes media freedom through coordinated action by MFC members’ diplomatic missions, in collaboration with journalists and civil society, and sometimes the national government, in various countries. 2022 was the first full year of this initiative and has seen diplomatic missions organizing events, facilitating dialogue, and making public statements, among other activities.

Since the publication of the High Level Panel's advisory Report on Safe Refuge for Journalists at Risk, several Coalition members have given effect to these recommendations or moved to expand their existing mechanisms in this area.

In September 2022, Canada and the Netherlands as co-chairs of the Media Freedom Coalition co-hosted a side-event during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, alongside the Freedom Online Coalition and International IDEA.
